
San Casciano is a charming medieval town, five minutes away from the Locanda, on the boundary with Umbria. It is located on the slopes of Mount Cetona, overlooking the Paglia Valley (Val D'Orcia). Its territory is characterized by the so called badlands, big clay cliffs and sand erosions, forming a spectacular lunar landscape.
Since the Etruscan-Roman age, San Casciano has been famous for its thermal waters.
In fact the Parish (a church with baptismal functions) was named “ Santa Maria De Balneo”, St. Mary of the Baths.
In Roman Times, its territory lay East of the Via Cassia (Cassia Road), and in the Middle Ages it took advantage of Via Francigena (Francigena Road), to the west.
In 995 the Marquis Ugo of Tuscany donated the “ Curtis de Bagno" to San Salvatore of Mount Amiata’s Abbey, a spectacular Abbey stilll open to visitors today

From the thirteenth century till the half of fourteenth century it was owned by Viscounts of Campiglia, a family linked to the area of Orvieto. Later in 1412 Monaldo Visconti brought San Casciano under the control of Siena. It then became a spa on a international scale.
In 1607 the Grand duke of Tuscany Ferdinando I, built the original structure of today's spa, characterized by 43 thermal springs at 42°C.
Be sure to visit Gothic Collegiate Church of San Leonardo and the Church of Santa Concezione, that show some frescos by Niccolò Circignani, called “ Il Pomarancio “.
Above San Casciano is the Fighine Castle, from which you can admire a beautiful view over Valdichiana. In the vicinity there is the village of Palazzone, a center for wine production, where you can visit the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which is characterized by a Baroque Internal.
In front of Radicofani and Mount Amiata there is Celle sul Rigo, overlooked by a stately medieval Tower.
In Celle sul Rigo, The Parish of San Paolo, The Church of San Giovanni and a seventeenth century well, situated in the centre of the square, are of great artistic importance.
